EAS371   Korean Cinema   (20 credits)

Description

Korean Cinema explores key critical approaches to the study of Korean cinema. We will examine key directors, cinematic movements and industry developments since the cinema's inception. This module will also introduce you to some of the key cinematic theoretical frameworks such as national and transnational cinemas, gender, spectatorship and concepts such as genre, Hallyu, Korean New Wave, colonialism/post-colonialism, melodrama, and alterity/otherness. Whilst the module will primarily engage with South Korean cinema we will also explore pre-Korean War cinema and North Korean cinema. We will examine the ways in which selected South Korean films and directors interact with the history and culture of South Korea. Finally we will consider how South Korean films have circulated globally and the impact this has had on the wider world's engagement with South Korea as a nation.
